The legal and ethical status of museum collections: curatorially motivated disposals

This resource relates to the Accreditation Standard 2.1 Satisfactory arrangement for the ownership of collections.

‘The museum must take responsibility for all the collections it manages. It must be able to provide information on the size of the collections and the proportion of the collections owned by and on loan to it. Any risks relating to collections on loan to the museum should be dealt with through forward planning.’

This resource provides legal advice and guidance on curatorially motivated disposal for museums in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is intended to supplement the Museums Association’s disposal toolkit. The guidance focuses on objects that are not being engaged with by the public and where a curator judges it may be best to dispose, particularly where there is a hope that it will be enjoyed elsewhere.
