Social History and Industrial Classification (SHIC)

The Social History and Industrial Classification (SHIC) system is used by many British museums with social history and industrial collections as a way to make links between objects through their context and background. It was first published in 1983.

The system is split into four main headings representing all aspects of human activity:

  1. Community life
  2. Domestic and family life
  3. Personal life
  4. Working life

There is also a Simple Subject Headings classification based on SHIC that is aimed at smaller museums.

The specialist subject network, Social History Curator’s Group (SHCG), obtained funding in 2012 to develop an on-line version of SHIC. Clicking the link on this page will open this resource to view in your current browser window.
