The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI Act) provides public access to information held by public authorities. Public authorities are obliged to publish certain information about their activities and members of the public are entitled to request information from public authorities.
However, certain categories of information can be exempted, and as such protected (in the case of museums this might be valuations). Although the FOI Act does not necessarily affect non-local authority organisations funded by public bodies, it is good practice to be open and transparent about the information your museum collects, and why you may not be able to provide access to it.
