Earlier this year Collections Trust commissioned independent consultants to evaluate our Arts Council England-funded activity. We wanted to understand our impact across the sector, how we’re perceived by our stakeholders, plus what we can do to help museums address the challenges they’re currently facing – and we’re happy to say that the resulting report is extremely positive.
“Collections Trust is the best Sector Support Organisation.”
Overall, there is a high level of recognition and regard for Collections Trust and our work. Our training, information, advice and guidance are valued, particularly our ability to tailor support to the needs of Museum Development teams, and our proposals for an open ecosystem for sharing collections data have been well received.
“At the start of the pandemic it was amazing how Collections Trust just went online.”
Among the challenges identified – and these will help inform our future activity – were the need to revisit terminology to address diversity and inclusion; documentation backlogs and collections rationalisation; loss of collections and subject expertise; the digital divide; and online and hybrid engagement models. We also need to build stakeholder perceptions of Collections Trust as a sector leader able to help solve some of the strategic challenges facing museums across all parts of the UK.
“Collections Trust delivers with us, not just to us.”
The report, which you can read in full here, was based on short online questionnaires and targeted follow-up phone calls with National Portfolio museums, sector bodies, funders and decision-makers. The research was carried out by Mustard&.
