GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018

We know that many of you are anxious about how the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will affect personal information held in your collections documentation, which may go back decades.

We have consulted a legal expert, who has advised that GDPR will need to be read alongside the UK’s new Data Protection Act 2018, which received Royal Assent on 23 May. Now the text of the UK law is known, we will commission and post legal advice on this specific aspect of the new law as soon as we can. Keep an eye out on our Twitter and Facebook pages or sign up to our newsletter.

We will also commission this same legal expert to look at our object entry, object exit and transfer of title forms, which we will then amend where necessary.

In the meantime, you can find some useful and reassuring words on the MA website; AIM has published a general guide to Successfully managing privacy and data regulations in small museums; and consultant Naomi Korn has written a useful data protection FAQs.
