The Security Audit

This is a guide to carrying out a Security Audit of your measures protecting your collections against fire, theft, flood and damage. It contains a Security Checklist, which can be used as an aid to a Security Audit.

The checklist is a series of questions which prompt you to check and record the findings from your audit in two areas:

  • Physical security measures such as cases, alarms, and locks
  • Procedural security measures such as alarm testing, staff training and collections inspections

This resource will help you with Museum Accreditation requirement 2.8: Expert Assessment of security arrangements. This requirement states that a ‘museum must obtain expert security advice for stored and exhibited collections at least every five years, and earlier if needed. It must plan to act on the advice over time.’

Collections Trust security resources have been updated and expanded with the support of Arts Council England and the Association of Chief Police Officers.
