Collections and the Law

This afternoon course will focus on various issues relating to collections management and the Law. Sarah Brown from Collections Trust, will discuss how effective museum documentation can help museums mitigate legal risks in relation to their collections. Sarah will demonstrate that the implementation of various SPECTRUM procedures can ensure museums have the appropriate records and processes in place, for example to manage information related to collections ownership and copyright. Following this, Janet Ulph from the University of Leicester, will provide an up to date overview of the criminal law, looking at recent prosecutions and whether there are any lessons for the museum sector. Janet will also explain and discuss proposals for law reform which will affect the management and disposal of museum collections. She will also comment upon museum closures.
