Collections rationalisation and review enables a museum to improve its understanding of a collection so that the collection can be used more effectively. This session will explore the benefits of collection reviews and rationalisation, to both the museum and visitors. The session will introduce different methodologies and frameworks, and information on planning a collections review. We will also look at the ethical and legal considerations of deaccession and disposal, as a potential outcome of rationalisation.
Over the past year, Collections Trust have been working on a revised version of the Spectrum collections management standard, Spectrum 5.0. This edition contains a new procedure for Collections Review, which will be introduced during this session.
We will also be joined by Anita Spencer, who will discuss the programme of collections rationalisation at Bakewell Museum.
